Made by renowned Swedish wood working tool makers Hans Karlsson Klensmide AB.
The broad edge and shallow sweep makes this a great finishing pushing gouge, typically used on the final stages of carving a bowl to reduce tool marks, functions best on the side walls of a bowl and may not be able to cut the bottom of deeper bowls.
Hans Karlsson has his own reference system to decribe the sweep (curvature) of a tools edge, in this case 90 is the curve of a circle designated by the radius measured in millimeters and 40 (1 1/2") is the length of the cutting edge in mm from corner to corner, .
The blade is made from high quality ball bearing steel (SS2258) so will take and hold a great edge. Hardened to 60 - 62 Rockwell
Bevel ground to 25 degrees.
Total length 255mm (10") including a 140mm (5 1/2") handle.
The lightly oiled handle is made from locally grown Swedish ash or elm and is very comfortable in the hand.
Designed for pushing not striking with a mallet.
Beautiful tool extremely well finished, sharpened and honed ready to use.
