Gransfors Bruk Large Carving Axe

5/5 1 review

Excellent all-round green woodworking axe.

The long curved cutting edge extends above the head's eye which makes slicing cuts easier to achieve.

For most people, the relatively thin bit and medium weight will make this a good generalist axe.

Originally developed in collaboration with Swedish master wood craftsman Wille Sundvist with inspiration from old axe designs.

Quite a heavily bearded axe which allows you to get your hand directly behind the bit for close-up fine work.

Available in 3 different grinds:

  • Double-sided Ground with equal bevels, suitable for right and left handed users. The equal bevels of the Double-sided Ground Axe makes this the most generally useful especially when removing wood from slightly concave features, such as spoon blanks. Will more willingly go where you want it to go compared to the Right or Left Ground Axes. It can be used by right or left handed users.
  • Right Ground is a handed axe suitable only for right-handed users, asymetrcal bevels, short on the right, long on the left. Right Ground axes work in a slightly different way,  they cut at a lower angle, 'biting' readily and work on straight or convex surfaces. They don't come well out of concave shapes. Preparing billets ready for the pole lathe and shaping the outside of bowl blanks is work Right Ground axes excell at.
  • Left Ground is a handed axe suitable only for left-handed users, asymetric bevels, short on the left, long on the right.  Left Ground axes work in a slightly different way,  they cut at a lower angle, 'biting' readily and work on straight or convex surfaces.  They don't come well out of concave shapes. Preparing billets ready for the pole lathe and shaping the outside of bowl blanks is work Left Ground axes excell at.

  • THE UNIVERSAL AXE

It seems to me (and maybe to others who own this this axe), that with the help of this axe, and enough time of course, it would be possible to build a cabin with all the interior furnishings and fixtures. It truly is an exceptional, very well designed and made tool. I especially commend the large convex cutting edge and its sharpness out of the box.

In short, it is the best axe I have had in my hands. Its weight at 950 g and discrete length at 38 cm facilitate portability. I congratulate Granfors Bruks on their work and encourage them to continue. M. Carles-Jordan.
