Gransfors Bruk Broad Axe, 1900

5/5 1 review

An axe based on an old Swedish pattern, normally associated with hewing large timbers.

Gransfors Bruk make 9 different versions of this axe, we stock three of these.

  • Straight, Double-sided ground.
  • Right Handle, Ground on the right only (for right handed use).
  • Right Handle, Double-sided ground (for right handed use).

SELECT 'GRIND' FROM DROP-DOWN-BOX BELOW

Right or left handed grinds permits planing cuts at a lower angle.

Space between the blade's beard and the handle for the user's fingers and hands gets force directly behind the cutting edge for more controlled work.

Commonly used to square logs for structural building timbers and for chopping where a heavier axe is required.

The Straight Double-sided ground variant finds favour with hedgelayers to lay large stems single handed due to its weighty head and relatively short handle.

We have found the weight in this axe useful to quickly remove stock on larger bowl blanks.

Heads weighs 3Ibs, with a 180mm (7") curved cutting edge.

The American hickory handle is 510mm (20") long without a swell knob.

Comes with a grain leather sheath, the Gransfors Bruk Axe Book and a 20 year guarantee on the head forging.

  • Another great axe from Gransfors

I purchased the right hand axe with a right hand grind a year ago for a couple of jobs I had in mind, I used it to hew a flat top onto a tulip tree stem that had been felled, it worked the timber off nicely. It took a little bit of getting used to but once I had the technique down it made short work of the job and the finished surface to very little final finishing. As for quality and edge retention like all Gransfors axes, it has stood up well and the handle fit is still nice and tight. If your looking for a broad axe I would highly recommend, it not as heavy as the American patterns so it can be used all day long without to much effort.
