Billhooks, Slashers and Grass Hooks

In our own coppicing work we cut mainly birch for besom brooms and hazel for wattle in-fill panels. Hazel in the north east, not generally growing in tight, deer free conditions, tends to be of fairly poor quality.

Billhooks are probably the single most important tool for the coppice worker. Users and collectors favour such old names as Elwell, Nash and Gilpin. The choice today for a new billhook is limited, however in the UK we still have A Morris and Sons (Edge Tools) of Dunsford and Bulldog making well balanced tools.  Both of these companies are well established, Morris first started in 1909, and Richard Morris is still making billhooks today.

Don't forget we have robust leather sheaths for most Morris and Bulldog tools.

ALL MORRIS BILLHOOKS COME WITH A  FACTORY FINISH, I.E. THE WORKING EDGE IS GROUND WITH THE CORRECT BEVEL BUT WILL REQUIRE SOME WORK TO REMOVE FLATS AND BURRS BEFORE USE. Click HERE for blog comment

BULLDOG BILLHOOKS COME GROUND WITH QUITE STEEP BEVELS AND WILL BENEFIT FROM THE BEVELS BEING LENGTHENED AND THE SHOULDER REMOVED.

If you would like us to prepare your new billhook, slasher or grasshook to a ready for use condition select SHARPENING as an EXTRA before adding it to your Tool Basket.
